Harriet Harman, Labour’s former deputy leader said she hoped the next Commons speaker will be a woman. Baroness Boothroyd insists Labour's Dennis Skinner walked out of the chamber before he was pushed after he branded a minister a "squirt" in 1992. Baroness Boothroyd presided over fiery debates on the European Union but described Nelson Mandela's state visit and parliament address in 1996 as "the most memorable moment of my time as Speaker". In March 1995, she was awarded an honorary degree from the Open University as Doctor of the University (DUniv). In April 1995, whilst on holiday in Morocco, Boothroyd became trapped in the AtlasMountains in the country's biggest storm in 20 years. She was a member of the Labour Party NationalExecutiveCommittee (NEC) from 1981 to 1987, [16] and the HouseofCommonsCommission from 1983 to 1987. In her teenage years, she became an accomplished dancer, but a foot infection put an end to her dance career. Hoyle, Prime Minister RishiSunak, and LeaderoftheOpposition, KeirStarmer, were among those in attendance, [42] [15]and her close friend, actress Dame PatriciaRoutledge, sang.

She was a successful and popular speaker who acquired international fame for her brisk, good-humoured style and for the warmth and wit she exuded, along with a whiff of glamour. In 1979, she became a member of the Selectcommittee on Foreign Affairs, until 1981, and of the Speaker's Panel of Chairmen, until 1 January 2000. The current Commons speaker, Lindsay Hoyle, led tributes to Boothroyd, describing her as an “inspirational woman and politician” who “stuck by the rules” and will be remembered for her “good humour and charm”. An ardent opponent of Brexit, she condemned Boris Johnson from the benches of the House of Lords, when the prime minister threatened to break international law in a row with the European Union in 2020. She subsequently worked in Washington, DC as a legislative assistant to American Congressman Silvio Conte, between 1960 and 1962.Betty Boothroyd, Baroness Boothroyd, OM , PC (8 October 1929 – 26 February 2023) was a British politician who served as a memberofParliament (MP) for WestBromwich and WestBromwichWest from 1973 to 2000. The then chief whip, Bob Mellish, reportedly told her: “Keep your trap shut, girl, and you will get on” but instead she resigned the post the following year to serve as an appointed member of the European Assembly, in the era before direct elections took place. Boothroyd modernised the Commons speaker role as she refused to wear the traditional white wig, and ensured her successors would be able to choose whether to do so.
