The book that a child is given is not only a book that the child is capable of reading, but a book that the child is capable of comprehending. We don't get Ginn, but one of DS2's friends does, and his mum has shared the joys of the books with me. The cover may have some limited signs of wear but the pages are clean, intact and the spine remains undamaged.

t may sound daft but school struggle to send home apporpraite books for his mental age that he can read.

I find it helpful to know how they compare, so that I can borrow books from the library at the right level for my child. Are you worried about your DS's reading ability or worried that the school aren't giving him the right level book for his age and ability? It's a non-selective school so I've assumed that the distribution of abilities in the class is fairly average.

So whilst she certainly isn't struggling with her reading, it could be so much more interesting and fun for her. From Year 2 on there is the "Pocket Reads" system (here, in true paper-traily substantiating style, is a link to what it covers) which I quite genuinely rate. swissmiss (2), wotte (2), burdettp (2), RachAnn (2), Bandings (2), HightowerLA (2), wingedaltrux (2), gpsman (2), ekscott7 (2), esther_a (2), MerryMary (2), janimar (2), greganddeb (2), ChildOfErasmus (2), jalual (2), margoletta (2), piemouth (2), saxtontual (1), jltcschmidt (1), HiViewLibrary (1), mkelly62 (1), bronwynm (1), DevonsCoffee (1), TessaNelson8821 (1), megysu88 (1), bibliothekar_nz (1), AuntGale (1), WolfScout55 (1), jjallencounselling (1), Millsap (1), AlishaPennings (1), PlumfieldLL (1), IrwinLibrary (1), dlr3292 (1), slathrop (1), The_Sheila_Jean_LBL (1), southwestbookworm (1), Doris0816 (1), ChristyMacEwan (1), ashagglibrary (1), Mrs. It's very noticeable that on the odd occasion that something interesting and well written pops up, how well she suddenly reads.Though I have come to hate that with a passion too, after 2 children learning to read and 4 years of volunteering to listen to readers in school. We are really lucky at the DSs' school, in that once they can read, they're allowed to take books in from home rather than the school's 'free readers' (which are a rather uninspiring selection). No, according to her teacher at our last parent-teacher meeting, DD1 is generally floating around in the second quartile. If your child does not like the reading scheme speak to the teacher, this is the kind of thing that puts children off reading for pleasure.

just make sure reading and listening to story are fun otherwise he will switch off completly then he will not be on any level ! My DD2 is 6, in Year 1 and on Stage 3 Oxford Reading Tree, but I have no idea how this compares to the Ginn books.
